I Didn't Realise I Could Have Complications from My Beauty Treatment.

Updated: Mar 27, 2019

Facial Aesthetics are arguably the most prevalent treatment women seek. From eyelash extensions to microblading and facial fillers, women now, more than ever, have wonderful options to enhance their looks with non invasive and minimally invasive procedures. But selecting the right professional to perform these procedures is only half of the formula necessary to ensure a great end result!

The Basic Do's and the Don't

As a health care professional with more than 2 decades of medical aesthetic experience, I have put together some universal best practice for any aesthetic procedure. These best practices can save you from a lot of unwanted complications... and heartbreak!

  • Listen to the Post Treatment instructions and follow them to the letter.

  • Call or text your Aesthetic professional if you have any concerns….they can clarify most things over the phone or if necessary have you send a pic or come in for a quick look.

  • Keep your follow up appointment. This appointment will let your Aesthetic professional see how things have gone and will do a touch up if needed to ensure a great result. Follow ups also help determine if further steps are needed.

  • Don’t listen to your friends and what they did post treatment … everybody is different and results can vary. Yes there are people that can get away with disregarding the instructions given but that’s likely not you…Only YOUR Practitioner knows how you tolerated the procedure and what you need to watch for.

  • Don’t involve another Aesthetic Professional if there is an issue. Let the person that treated you resolve any issues that present themselves. If you aren’t satisfied with their approach after you’ve contacted them, then seek an alternate.

  • Don’t wait. If you’ve had a procedure done and weeks after you develop redness, tenderness or swelling, seek help right away. Signs of infection are best treated early.

The 3 Most Popular Beauty Treatments... What could go Wrong?

In the world of facial Aesthetics there are some Post Care instructions that all well trained Practitioners agree on for a certain procedure….

1. Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions may seem like a foolproof application of instant sexiness. In the wrong hands and with poor post care you can end up with a much different experience than expected.

  • Do sleep on your back…the glue takes awhile to dry and you will end up with kinks in your lashes if they dry while touching a pillow.

  • Sleep on a dustmite resistant pillow

  • Cleanse your lashes daily

  • Don’t sleep on your stomach with your face squashed into the pillow.

  • Don’t sleep on your side unless you are on a contoured Anti-Aging pillow.

  • Don’t touch your lashes with unwashed hands

  1. Eye Infections

  2. Corneal Abrasions

  3. Damage to the eyelash follicle

2. Microblading

Following your microblading aftercare instructions is incredibly important for best results!

If you don't follow the instructions you risk reducing the length of your results and may increase your risk of infection.

  • Do only use a baby wipe to touch them

  • Do sleep on your back or a side sleeping Antiaging pillow

  • Don’t get them wet at all for the first 3 weeks

  • Don’t touch, scratch or pick

  • Don’t expose them to heat ( sauna, direct sunlight, tanning beds, working out or blow dryer Avoid sleeping on your face for the first 10 days.

  1. Infections

  2. Allergic Reactions

  3. Dissatisfaction

3. Facial Fillers

This treatment must be done by a licensed professional with formal training with an underlying knowledge of facial anatomy and vascular danger zones.

  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.

  • Hydrate with water

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

  • If you have swelling you may apply a cool compress for 15 minutes each hour.

  • Use Tylenol for discomfort.

  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area. Unless instructed by the provider

  • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.

  1. Infection

  2. Hypersensitivity reaction

  3. Avascular necrosis

As important as post treatment instructions, always make sure you choose the right provider.

Things to look for during your consultation:

  • Make sure the space is clean…this will give you an idea of the practitioner’s standards.

  • Don’t settle for the cheapest quote.. your face is worth more.

  • Ask to see their own photo gallery of their handiwork ie before and after photos.

  • Word of mouth recommendations and Google reviews are important too!
